May Cruise 2009

Ariel is home and not working yet, Steve is still not working, I'm not working, kids are in school...hmmmm sounds like a great time to go on vacation! We decided to look for a place we haven't been, something economical or "all-inclusivish", something easy to plan (we only had a planning window of about 3 weeks) and someplace WARM (and NOT Mexico - swine flu terrors).

We found a cruise that would port out of Puerto Rico and would hit the islands of Aruba, Curacao, Dominica (all places we have never been to), and St. Thomas (we've been there, but would love to go back). We booked the trip, invited some friends of ours (and two couples were actually able to join us...yes, with only 3 weeks notice) and we were off the the Carribean!

We have a great friend who lives in Miami, so we decided to spend 3 days in Miami before heading to Puerto Rico.
On our morning walk, Steve was attempting to make friends with Mr. Pelican. Mr. Pelican wasn't interested in being HIS friend - he seemed to be looking for his escape route.
Steve and Scott talking using grand gestures at THE south beach! We were so bummed we didn't have our swimsuits under our clothes. It was a perfect day for a dip in the ocean! Scott was the ultimate tour guide of Miami taking us to all the great, must-see spots.
We made it to Puerto Rico and onto the Royal Carribeans, Adventure Of the Sea.

We were celebrating our 20th Anniversary just a little early.
Our friends the Hunters from Arizona, US, and the Dotsons from Utah. Photo taken before dinner! Oh don't get me started on the FOOD! As was typical on past cruises, our day revolved around eating. For some reason when I step foot on a cruise ship, I seem to always be hungry (and my desire to work out fades almost completely).
Our first Island stop was Aruba. While the boys went scuba diving, the girls took an island tour of Aruba. One half the island is a rocky moon like desert and the other half is a little more green with a beautiful stretch of hotels and luscious beach.
.On the next stop, the island of Curacao, we all rented cute little dune buggies to tour the island. Our bodies were covered with red sand and we were completely wind blown as a result.

Our Favorite beach on Curacao...and...my new Happy Place to visualize when I need a mental break.
Greasy burger anyone? One afternoon we decided to go eat at the Johnny Rockets Diner on the ship. We had Diet Coke, Shakes, onion rings, fries, chicken burgers, and big burgers as shown. We rolled out of there ready for the poolside lounge chairs!

The scenes of Dominca

We walked around the Port city of Roseau, Dominica. The colors and sights of this poor city really amazed me and I couldn't stop taking photo's of all the unique sights.

Our main activity in Dominica was to go Zip lining through the tree-tops. All harnessed up and ready to go. Is this safe in a foreign country?

At dinner with some nice sunshine on our faces!

We ported in St. Thomas, but, since we had already been to that island, we took a boat over to St. John to spend the day. We had researched to find a lovely beach there, and even though the day was a bit overcast we had an enjoyable day lounging around on the sand.

Shopping in St. Thomas with the The Adventure of the Seas behind us. Last stop of the Cruise.

One of our favorite things about the cruise ship was the soft serve ice cream machines. It was the best dessert and refreshing snack around. We had several a day and we weren't sure what we would do once we got home and no longer had access to such a machine.
It was a great trip and, as always, we look forward to the next one.
