Manitou Springs & Garden of the Gods

3/15/09

One bright March day we decided to head down to Manitou Springs to see and explore the Cave of the Winds, taste the natural Manitou Spring water and spend some time at the Garden of the Gods (one of our favorite Colorado spots).

First we get our tickets to the "Cave of the Winds" tour.  The Caves were discovered in the 1800s by two young boys (brothers) who were out for a day of adventure...I'd say.
The caves were a little disappointing to me as they were dry caves and not the beautiful "glowing" type caves we are use to seeing in these types of tours, but the kids LOVED being underground and going all through the tunnels.

There were lots of narrow tunnels and staircases that could make someone who struggles with Claustrophobia VERY anxious.
Chandler found a friendly bear to play with in the gift shop.

After we had our fill of the caves we headed into Manitou Springs, the town. After finding our parking space (no easy task in this town) we walked up and down the cute little streets in search of the natural springs "huts". "Manitou," is a Native American word for "spirit" . Along our walk the kids spotted some HUGE hula hoops left out for the people to "try" (at least we hope it was o.k.). We all gave the hoops a try and found out it was as fun as it looks. Chandler got the prize for the best hoola hooper!

Nine named mineral springs throughout town are fed by the snows of Pikes Peak. It is recommended that you take a cup with you along your walk to find the springs to taste them all as they all supposedly all have their own unique flavor. We decided the unique flavor must be called YUCK!!!

Looks like the yuck water really was yuck by the faces in the pic! Gabby has the best "yuck" look out of all of you! Looks like a fun little trip minus the water tasting!
